Moving From Apartment to House

Moving from an apartment to a house can be an exciting and daunting experience. On one hand, you have more space to decorate and make your own. On the other hand, the process of moving can be stressful and time-consuming.

Plan Ahead

The key to a successful move is planning. Begin by making a list of everything you need to do before the move, such as changing your address, disconnecting utilities, and packing. Start packing early to avoid a last-minute rush. This will also give you enough time to declutter and get rid of things you no longer need.

Stockpiling

Most often when moving from an apartment into a home, you’ll have more space to fill. That extra bookcase that you crammed stuff on and didn’t think you’d want? Keep it! It’s usable in your spare bedroom or even in your kitchen. Instead of filling it with trinkets, display some cool framed art or whatever gives that room some extra character. This is also a great time to go through all the “extras” you keep. Ask yourself, if these are items that you will need in your new space, or would it be a waste?

Pack Efficiently

To make unpacking easier, you should pack efficiently. Label boxes with the contents and the room they belong in. This will help when it comes time to place the boxes in your new home. Use bubble wrap or packing paper to protect fragile items. To save space, invest in vacuum-sealed bags. This is great for linens, towels and pillows.

Take Measurements

Before moving day, take measurements of the rooms in your new home. This will help you determine what furniture will fit and where it should be placed. Make a sketch or diagram of your new home, and label each room. Share this information with your movers or family members so they can quickly and efficiently unload your belongings.

Change the locks and make spare keys.

Having new keys and locks made for your home is relatively inexpensive. The previous owner may have shared spare keys with neighbors, repair people and others. You can also have a spare key made and leave it with someone you trust in case you lock yourself out.
